Battle Hot Chocolate Round 1. Trophy Cupcakes vs. Chocolate Box Part I

August 1, 2008 by andai

Battle Hot Chocolate
Battle Hot Chocolate, originally uploaded by andai.

This is the first of the battle series which I will be posting from time to time. The aim of the battle series is to drink and compare two beverages from different coffee, tea or chocolate houses and see which one triumphs over the other. The first of the battle series will be ‘Battle Hot Chocolate’. The contenders are Chocolate Box’s Chocolate Vitale Hot Chocolate and Trophy Cupcakes’ signature ‘House Hot Chocolate’.

Unfortunately, this battle was a non starter. I was able to get down to Chocolate Box which is on Pine St one block east of Pike Place Market, downtown Seattle and get a cup of their extremely chocolaty Chocolate Vitale Hot Chocolate but no such luck at Trophy Cupcakes in Wallingford. They were out of their signature House Hot Chocolate. I guess Saturday was a busy and hectic day and the bakers simply did not have time to make another batch of the drink. I asked the barista if they would have any on Sunday, but she didn’t think they’d have any till Monday.

She offered to make me a hot chocolate drink using their dark chocolate mixed in with steamed milk and vanilla sweetener. The sample she made was ok but certainly nothing to write home to mom about. So she offered to make another, but this time use half and half instead a breve sort of a hot chocolate drink. Surprisingly (or maybe not) it wasn’t too back at all. The half and half certainly gave the chocolate a creamier taste to it. I still think it could have been even creamier… I didn’t have time to hang around and ask her to throw in some heavy cream into the mix but that I think should have done the trick.

The long and the short of it is that I will have to go back and get their signature drink so I can complete the Battle Hot Chocolate Round 1.

I don’t know who has the best hot chocolate. I think Starbucks makes a pretty good cup.

However, if you have the chance to make some hot chocolate on your own, there is a cool trick that you can to to really make it taste spectacular. It has to do with a dove chocolate bar, and where you put the whipping cream. Anyways, if you make it on your own. Some people would rather just go to a coffee shop though ;) .
